Creative observations

14th June 2015

I have been recruiting across the MENA region for jobs in advertising for almost ten months now and so far I have been thoroughly encouraged by what I have seen.

It’s an exciting time to be part of what is a booming communications industry and advertising in particular is an exciting sector to work in.

I have found the diverse array of clients we work with highly rewarding; from well-established multinationals that are growing their teams and expanding their digital offering to ambitious start ups making their first steps in the region with big plans for the future.

My role at MCG Associates specifically focuses on placing junior to senior level talent across the strategic planning and account management departments in advertising agencies.

Being passionate about the sector I work in, it has been great gaining an insight into the inner workings of multinational and boutique advertising shops and speaking to a diverse array of talent, understanding their role in the creative process, which is now putting together world class campaigns that are placing this region on the map.

I have been majorly impressed with the level of talent and professionalism I have seen from lots of different nationalities working within the industry; this for me is one of the most fulfilling parts of my job – speaking to people from different cultures, learning about their backgrounds, careers and how they are looking to progress in their careers. There is some truly exceptional talent applying their trade here!

Saying this, with the rapid growth this region is experiencing, the need for fresh talent is still an absolute prerequisite. The way the communications industry markets itself to young locals as an exciting career path is key. The industry should be dedicated to nurturing homegrown Arabic talent and it has been great to see some of our clients starting initiatives and feeder programmes with local universities.

Relocation from other regions is fundamental to this sector’s future development as well. I have spoken to some outstanding talent from world-renowned agencies such as Adam&EveDDB, Ogilvy BlueHive, Saatchi & Saatchi London and Sid Lee Amsterdam in developed markets such as London, New York and Amsterdam. Some real senior figures from these markets are actively seeking roles here and are excited by the promise of a Middle Eastern communication hub with the great lifestyle to come with it. Our clients’ willingness to relocate, in what can be an expensive process, is great to see, as they are dedicated to bringing the best talent to these shores.

Leading up to Expo 2020 I am really excited to see the development of the Ad industry in this region. We are going to see spectacular growth and I am delighted to be part of it.
